The 1984 reform introduced the Xtracab two-row extended cab option. There was also a model for injection, the 22R-E. Two diesel engines are offered, the 2L and 2L-T turbo. Diesel engines were abandoned in United States after model year 1986, this was due to expectations of higher returns from customers and the availability of gasoline cheap. The following year saw the introduction of a turbo option, the 22R-TE. The solid front axle was swapped for a suspension independent front and torsion bar setup in the 4×4 model in 1986, and optional automatic locking front hubs and an electronic transfer case was added as well. A V6 engine was introduced in 1988.

Recreational vehicles (RV) were built on a truck chassis Toyota since the introduction the Chinook in 1977 on a Toyota chassis standard of service until 1993, when the last Winnebago and national coaches have been completed on their latest 1992 chassis. Since that time there were a number of manufacturers who used the chassis of Toyota light trucks built small houses in the class C motor, including Chinook, RBR, New Horizons, Coachman, Huntsman, national (under the names Dolphin and Seabreaze), Winnebago Industries (under the Itasca and the name Winnebago), and Gardner Pacific (under the name SUNRAD). From 1986 RV manufacturers have started using the heaviest Toyota 1 ton cab and chassis.
Reputation
The Hilux has gained an outstanding reputation for ruggedness and reliability, even in severe sustained and / or abuse, and is often referred to as "The Indestructible Car". This was further strengthened by the BBC car show Top Gear, when a 1988 Hilux with 190,000 miles (308.000 km) to the odometer has been subjected to extraordinary abuse (in the series 3, episodes 5 and 6). He was the lead down a flight of stairs, scraping buildings, crashing headfirst into a tree to be blown away by the sea and completely submerged, it was driving in a garden shed from a caravan on it, hitting it with a wrecking ball, setting the cab and bed on fire, and finally placing it on top of a 240-foot (73 m) building, which was then destroyed by controlled demolition. Although was now suffering from serious structural damage, the truck was still running after being repaired without spare parts and only with typical tools and equipment that is the toolbox of a car, such as screwdrivers, motor oil, and a key, but WD40 was used to get the engine running after being recovered at sea Hilux currently resides as one of the sets background in the Top Gear studio.
In the 2006 series (series 8, episode 3), a Hilux was chosen by Jeremy Clarkson as his platform to create a vehicle amphibian. With help, Clarkson rigged the truck with a massive outboard motor, ironically made by Honda, and the steering mechanism in the pickup bed. The truck redubbed the "Toybota" was driven by Clarkson over several miles by road and two miles (3 km) across open water, before capsizing during a quick turn. Once recovered, the vehicle has been moved back to the Studio Top Gear, where Clarkson said some it would be the only one capable of driving his car at home because he was the indestructible Hilux. However, Clarkson could not get the Hilux started who led his co-hosts to believe that Clarkson had finally destroyed the "indestructible". In the 2007 series (Series 10, Episode 2), Clarkson opted a Nissan pickup instead of a Hilux in a second amphibious challenge, successfully crossing the English Channel in the vehicle.
In 2007, Top Gear has organized a special program in which Clarkson and James May raced a 2005 Hilux model to measure the magnetic north pole in 1996 in Northern Canada against Richard Hammond using a sled dog. The race, known as the Hilux Arctic Challenge, the truck made the first car to reach the magnetic North Pole.
Outside television, these vehicles have been known for more than 300,000 miles (~ 500.000 km) with regular maintenance. It is also notorious to be used as an improvised fighting vehicle "technical" militias and irregular military forces there, especially in Third World conflicts. Toyota War between Libya and Chad was so named because of the use of Hilux trucks as light cavalry of the Chadian army. These vehicles were also used in the Iraq war as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The militias have been known to equip this vehicle broadcast, post-Soviet missiles and equipment. The war saw the Toyota Hilux use as a tow vehicle, serving as an aircraft tug and pull tank for tank T-62 heavy. There are currently 37 customized Hilux used by the People's Liberation Army the southern region of China. The Toyota Hilux has been widely used by the Pakistani army, but Mitsubishi L200 were purchased instead of the sixth generation Hilux recently replace worn vehicles.
In October 2007, the Swedish car magazine conducted a Teknikens Vrld avoidance maneuver (moose test) that revealed that the Hilux pickup truck was far from ideal for turning abruptly high speed. The car failed the test and that the pilot's ability prevented him from falling over. After the test Toyota stopped the sales Hilux with 16 inch wheels in Europe.
A world record was achieved by the support team for the participants in this 2008/2009 of Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race. The crew made specially adapted Toyota Hilux modified by Arctic Trucks, completion of a output of over 5000 km from Novo, a Russian scientific station in Antarctica to the South Pole and vice versa, making them the first 4×4 reach the South Pole. The return journey of 2500 km from South Pole station Novo completed in a record 8 days and 17 hours.
